Creare immagini tridimensionali
Il foglio è piatto ma i vostri disegni non lo saranno!

In un periodo dove il 3D sembra essere improvvisamente fondamentale persino in TV, non vorrete di certo disegnare cose piatte e bidimensionali!
Come accennato nei post di “percezione visiva” e “volume” non è difficile ingannare il nostro cervello e fargli percepire volume e profondità.

La profondità nel disegno non si acquisisce facendo centinaia di illustrazioni a colori ma si impara nelle prime fasi di studio quando traduciamo quello che vediamo o immaginiamo in segni su un foglio bianco e piatto.
Oggi con la pittura digitale e la possibilità di vedere e sperimentare tecniche tramite programmi grafici, si tende a correre verso l'immagine finale senza dare la giusta attenzione allo studio delle forme e della loro collocazione spaziale.

Troppo spesso vedo illustrazioni con una tecnica pittorica buona ed una attenzione ai dettagli maniacale ma privi di struttura, di studio compositivo, di volume.
Approfondiremo questo argomento e ci torneremo più volte perchè fa parte della filosofia di questo blog.

Il disegno non è un atto meramente meccanico, cerchiamo di disegnare con la mano, ma anche con il cervello e poi riusciremo a farlo anche con l'anima. Ora può suonare strano ma se seguirete questo metodo lo capirete da soli.

Ogni linea che traccerete deve avere un significato e relazionarsi correttamente con le altre.
Copiate oggetti, partendo da quelli semplici fino ai più complessi, sforzandovi di immaginare la loro solidità, il loro peso e volume.
Il cervello ha la capacità di smontare ciò che vediamo e tradurlo in forme semplici e riconoscibili.
Allenatelo a farlo con il disegno, a trovare in ogni oggetto gli elementi base che lo compongono, cilindri, sfere, parallelepipedi.

Potete farlo con la vostra penna usb, il microonde, un cellulare, un tavolo apparecchiato...

Una volta che avrete preso la mano potrete passare a forme organiche e più complesse, come un piatto di spezzatino, un cane, un uomo...o una donna.
Ma non abbiate fretta, lo affronteremo presto nella versione "Avanzata" di questo post!

CONSIGLI

_Guardate “attraverso” gli oggetti, disegnate sempre le linee principali che compongono l'oggetto ritratto, immaginando dove si riuniscono ed incrociano nelle parti non visibili.

_Limitatevi ad un paio di livelli di definizione, per ora non fatevi prendere dalla scimmia del dettaglio, soprattutto quando lavorerete sugli esseri umani o gli animali...

_Seguite l'ordine di difficoltà suggerito,prima oggetti semplici (non composti), poi oggetti complessi (composti da più elementi), ed infine oggetti organici e viventi.

_Se copiate da fotografie scegliete immagini ben chiare e semplici, se sono figure umane o animali, scegliete inizialmente pose non complesse.

How to create three-dimensional images
A sheet of paper is flat, but your drawings don't have to be as well!

In an age like this one, where 3D seems to be the minimum requirement even in TV and movies, your drawings can't afford to be flat!
As already covered in the "Visual perception" and "Volume" articles previously posted on this blog, we can easily deceive our brain to see volume and depth.

The skills to describe depth and form in drawing are not acquired only by doing hundreds of full color, complex illustrations, but are learnt in the preliminary phases of the creation of artwork, the sketch phase.The really important work is done in the beginning, when we translate what we see or imagine in our minds and we put it down on a flat, white sheet of paper.

Today, throught digital painting and the possibilities of seeing and experimenting different techniques with a load of different softwares and applications, we tend to rush towards the final picture without giving the sufficient attention to the study of shapes and their spacial arrangement.
Too often we see illustration with a good painting technique and an obsessive attention to detail but with a poorly structured base, in both composition, anatomy and volume.

We'll talk about this subject and will often get back to it as part of this blog's philosophy.
Drawing is not a mere mechanical procedure.We try to draw with out hand, our brain and will eventually end up to put our soul into it as well.
It might sound weird but if you'll follow this method you will understand yourself.

Every line you put down must have a meaning and be related to all the rest of the lines that form the picture.
Copy objects from life, starting from simple ones and moving on to more complex ones, putting effort in imagining their solidity, their weight and volume.

The brain has the power to dissect what we see and translate it into simpler shapes.
Train yourself while you draw, look for simple, basic shapes that compose objects of all kinds, be it cilinders, spheres, boxes and wedges.

You can do it with your USB key,your cell phone, your microwave, your kitchen table.

Once you've familiarised yourself with simple shapes you'll be able to move on to more complex shapes, both organinc and inorganic, including humans and animals.
Do not rush!
We will tackle it in the "advanced" version of this post!

SUGGESTIONS:

-Look "through" objects, always draw the construction lines that make up the object you intend to represent, imaging where even parts you can't directly see merge and cross each other.

-Limit yourself to a couple of complexity "layers", don't get too bothered with detail, especially when working on humans or animals.

-Follow the suggested order of difficulty, going from simple objects (single simple shapes) to complex ones (more than one shape) and then onto organic objects.

-If working from photographs, choose clear and simple images, and if they are umans and animals, choose simple poses.

The ideal condition would be to study both from photo and from life.With digital photography all this has become incredibly simple, snap a picture of your PC, your microwave or chair and copy it from life and from the 2d photo you took.While drawing from the 2d image, keeping an eye on the real object will make volumes and shapes clearer, and improve your own 3D mental image of the object.

Colorare un personaggio cartoon SECONDA PARTE

5_OMBRA
In questa fase vengono definite le ombre più nette e quelle portate.
Le ombre verranno tracciate su un nuovo layer chiamato "Ombra1", sistemato in Multiply sotto il "colore".
Questa volta utilizzate un grigio più scuro rispetto agli altri layer. Non vi do indicazioni numeriche sul tono esatto, io personalmente preferisco utilizzare un grigio più scuro e poi gestire con la trasparenza l'intensità desiderata.
Potete usare un pennello di grandezza media (a seconda delle dimensioni del disegno" totalmente coprente (opaco 100%) e con bordo quasi netto.
In questo caso con Photopaint, ho usato dei poligoni riempiti di grigio per ottenere ombre più spigolose, nel caso di Photoshop potete creare delle selezioni sulle parti da colorare e riempirle.
Applicate le ombre seguendo il punto luce, e cercando di immaginare il rilievo volumetrico della figura. Se notate, il cappello ha molta ombra sulla parte inferiore anche sul lato esposto alla luce, perché ha una forma a fungo che in questo modo risulta accentuata.
Anche il ciuffo a destra è quasi tutto in ombra perché va immaginato nello spazio che occupa rispetto al volto ed al cappello, pensate tridimensionalmente!

6_LUCE
Questa fase serve ad aggiungere i primi leggeri colpi di luce.
Il nuovo layer sarà in "Aggiungi" (come per la luce diffusa- punto4-) gli accorgimenti sul livello di trasparenza sono gli stessi.
Create delle aree di luce nei punti di maggior esposizione.
Non esagerate con le dimensioni di queste aree altrimenti il disegno tenderà ad appiattirsi.

7_ DETTAGLI
A questo punto avete già una buona versione del vostro disegno a colori, ho aggiunto solo qui alcuni dettagli, direttamente sul layer 2.
Il dettagli sulle lenti, le lentiggini, un ombra in più sotto il mento e nelle pieghe del colletto.

8/9_ TOCCO FINALE
Questi ultimi passaggi sono un ulteriore aggiunta di dettaglio e volumetria.
Nel passaggio 8 ho aggiunto un altro layer con le stesse impostazioni del numero 6 aggiungendo altri colpi di luce, mantenendo la trasparenza meno accentuata.
Nel passaggio 9 ho aggiunto un effetto sporco con qualche pennellata grigio molto chiaro su un layer in più in Moltiplica.

SUGGERIMENTI
Durante il lavoro, ogni tanto specchiate l'immagine orizzontalmente.
Questo vi aiuterà ad accorgervi di piccoli errori che l'occhio, per troppo tempo sull'immagine, tende a lasciarsi indietro.
Questo trucco funziona anche disegnando su carta. Mettendo il disegno di tanto in tanto davanti allo specchio, la nuova prospettiva vi rivelerà le imperfezioni.
Aggiungete un pochino di filtro (precisione) all'immagine con i layer collassati.
Darà un buon effetto all'immagine finale.

Coloring a cartoon character SECOND PART

5_SHADING
In this phase we’re going to work on the stronger shadows and the cast shadows.
We are going to paint these shadows on a new layer named “Shadow1” and set with a multiply filter below the layer named “color”.
This time you need to use a darker grey than the one used on the other layers. No need to indicate a precise shade of grey as long as its darker, you'll still be able to adjust its intensity at a later stage by changing the layer transparency.
You can use a hard round brush set to 100% opacity.
You can also create poligonal selections with the lasso and fill them with grey.
Draw shadows following the direction of the light and trying to keep in mind the form of the figure and its parts. As you can see the hat has more shadow on the bottom part than in the one exposed to the light because it has a shape similar to a mushroom and in this way it is more emphasized.
Also the hairs’ tuft on the right is all in shadow because you need to imagine it related to the space that it’s occupying compared to the face and the hat: you need to think in three dimensions!

6_LIGHT
In this step we will add the highlights.
The new layer is again set to “Linear Dodge (Add)” and with the same transparency parameters as for the layer used step 4.
Create some light areas in the areas of the shape that are more exposed to light.
Try to avoid making these light areas too big or the drawing will look flat.

7_DETAILS
At this point we've reached a good point with colors, light and shadow, and its time to add some details on the second layer .
Some detail is added on the glasses,the freckles, a shadow under the chin and some folds on the collar.

8/9_FINAL TOUCH
These last steps are for adding more details and giving more volume to shapes.
In step 8 I added another layer with the same settings of the 6th step adding some highlights and maintaining a lower transparency.
In step 9 I added a dirt effect with some light grety brushstrokes on a new layer set to “Multiply”

SUGGESTIONS
While working on an image, flip it horizontally (Image-Rotate Canvas-Flip Canvas Horizontal): this will help you to find out some errors that the eye is unable to see because it is used to watch the picture.
This tip is useful also when you’re drawing on paper: looking at your drawing reflected in a mirror will help you to find a lot of imperfections!
Add a little bit of sharpen effect on the collapsed version of the image.
It give to the drawing a nice touch.

Coloring a cartoon character FIRST PART

1_DRAWING_
In this case the work is drawn in pencil, lines have been inked using a marker and the final drawing has been scanned. I suggest you to use a big resolution, like 200/300 dpi.
The first step after scanning is cleaning the drawing: this phase is called “clean–up”.
Our drawing will be on a layer called “Drawing” set to “Multiply” mode.
The Multiply layer mode allows us to paint “under” the linework.
It is really important to give good contrasts between the colors and that all the white parts are “true” white (r255,g255,b255) otherwise the “Multiply” layer mode will affect the underlying colors.

2_COLOR_
After obtaining a cleaned “line-art”, the first phase of the coloring is to paint with flat tones every part of the character: skin, clothes, hair, etc.
We need a new layer that we'll name “Color” and that will be under the one named “Drawing”.
In this phase we want to fill areas with flat color, without gradients , so you can use the Bucket tool or a Hard Brush set to 100% opacity.
If you’re using the Bucket tool, select areas with the Magic Wand and use “Expand Selection” (1 or 2 pixels) in order to avoid creating gaps between the linework and color.
I Usually try and stick to a 3-4 color palette, from which I gain also a secondary one . Using less colors is always better!
If you don’t know what kind of colors to use or how to combine them, you can download some images of cartoon characters to use as reference…it’s useful!
Using a picture as reference will help you to understand what kind of chromatic choices have been taken depending on the character type!

3_DIFFUSE SHADING
It might sound strange, but the coloring stage is already over!
Now it is all a matter of light and shadow!
Create a new layer called “diffuse shadow” and put this layer between the “drawing” and the “color” layer and again set it to “Multiply”.
It’s really important to choose a light source for your drawing ( in our case the light is coming from the top left side).
Again, you can take a look at some cartoon screenshots in order to understand how to use lights to communicate feelings.
This phase allows you to draw some light shadows on the character and to start defining form.
Use a simply black transparent (50% opacity) soft brush.
Start painting lightly in grey ( the multiply filter will use them in order to darken the colored areas) in the areas that are on the opposite side of lit area; especially in the areas that are hidden to light, in the joints of the elements, between lenses, under the hat and under the hair etc…
You can adjust the transparency of the layer trying to reach the proper shadow intensity.

4_DIFFUSE LIGHT
This phase is technically identical to the first one, but we need to obtain an opposite result.
Create a layer named “Diffuse Light” and place it over the “drawing” layer, but this time set the layer mode to “Linear Dodge (Add)”.
Then set the opacity of the layer to 10/15% (very transparent) and use the same brush used during the third phase (still using grey)
This time the grey that we’re going to paint will actually make the colors lighter instead of darker.
Paint on areas that are more exposed to the light, opposite to onesthat are in shadow: on the left - top side of the hat (leaving shadow through the folding) on the forward part of the hair, on the face etc...
This phase will complete the previous one giving more volume to shapes.
Be careful to not exaggerate in steps 3 and 4, because lights and shadows should not destroy the drawing covering it... and always keep in mind the light source!

Colorare un personaggio cartoon PRIMA PARTE

1_DISEGNO_
In questo caso il disegno è stato realizzato a matita su carta, successivamente ripassato con un pennarello e scansionato.
Vi consiglio una risoluzione alta, 200/300 dpi
Il primo passo, dopo la scansione, è la pulizia del disegno detto
“ clean – up”.
Il disegno sarà un layer denominato "disegno" e sarà in "moltiplica" "multiply".
Questo consente di vedere il livello di colore che stenderemo sotto.
Cercate di dare al disegno un buon contrasto, è importante che tutte le parti bianche del disegno siano davvero bianche r255,g255,b255 altrimenti il filtro Moltiplica sfalserà i colori sottostanti.

2_COLORE_
Ottenuta una "lineart" pulita la prima fase della colorazione consiste nella stesura di tinte piatte delle varie parti del personaggio, pelle, vestiti, capelli...
Occorre un nuovo layer chiamato "Colore" e sistemato sotto al disegno.
Questa fase di colorazione è a tinte piatte, nessuna sfumatura o gradient di colore (*non sono la stessa cosa?), potete usare lo strumento secchiello, oppure un pennello con i bordi netti e opaco al 100%
Per i riempimenti con il secchiello selezionate le aree con la bacchetta magica e poi espandete di uno o due pixel la selezione di modo da non lasciare fessure bianche tra la linea del disegno e le campiture di colore.
Di solito mi creo una palette di 3-4 colori principali, dalla quale ricavo qualche secondario. Meno sono meglio è!
Se non sapete che colori scegliere o come abbinarli potete sempre scaricarvi qualche immagine di personaggi cartoon e attingere direttamente da li!...molto comodo!
Questo vi aiuterà a capire che tipo di scelte cromatiche vengono fatte aseconda del carattere e della personalità dei personaggi!

3_OMBRA diffusa
Vi sembrerà strano ma la parte di colorazione è finita!
Già, perché ora il resto è tutta una questione di luce e ombra!
Create un nuovo layer che "ombra diffusa" e sistematelo sotto al livello del disegno e sopra al colore ancora e anche questa volta settate Multiply.
E' importante avere ben chiaro da dove proviene la luce (in questo caso è in alto a sinistra).
Anche questa volta potete guardare fotogrammi di cartoni per comprendere l'uso "drammatico della luce"
Questa fase permette di stendere le ombre più leggere proprie della figura e di creare un primo abbozzo del volume.
Usate un pennello molto trasparente e molto sfumato, con un grigio medio. Un nero al 50%
Cominciate a stendere delle velature di grigio (che in multiply andranno automaticamente a scurire le zone di colore) nelle zone opposte alla direzione della luce, insistendo nelle parti più nascoste e negli interstizi tra gli elementi, tra le lenti, sotto al cappello ed ai capelli ecc.
Infine potete gestire la trasparenza del livello, per trovare la giusta intensità dell'ombra.

4_LUCE diffusa
Questa fase è quasi tecnicamente identica alla prima, ma serve ad ottenere l'effetto opposto.
Create un layer chiamato "Luce diffusa" e lo sistematelo sempre in alto sotto al disegno, ma questa volta in "Aggiungi"
Poi settate l'opacità del layer a 10/15% (molto trasparente) ed utilizzate lo stesso pennello che avete usato nella fase 3 con lo stesso grigio.
Questa volta il velo di grigio che stenderemo con il filtro additivo andrà a schiarire il colore sottostante.
Lo facciamo in tutti i punti più esposti alla luce in contrapposizione alle zone d'ombra; sulla cima a sinistra del cappello (cercando di lasciare l'ombra precedente tra le pieghe) nella parte davanti del ciuffo di capelli, sul volto ecc.
Questa fase completa quella precedente aggiungendo ulteriore volume alle forme.
Fate attenzione a non esagerare con l'effetto dei punti 3e4, non deve essere invasivo, e soprattutto tenete sempre a mente la direzione della luce!

Prospettiva _ Prima Parte

Premetto che in questo blog non mi prefiggo di insegnarvi le tecniche esatte e specifiche della prospettiva.
Ci sono libri e siti dove troverete più informazioni di quante possa darvene io.
Vedremo invece le basi ed i concetti principali e fondamentali per l'artista più qualche dettaglio in più che ci verrà utile!
Conoscere le basi della prospettiva è essenziale per almeno 2 motivi:
Ci aiuta a rappresentare i volumi
Ci aiuta a mettere in relazione tra loro forme e figure di una scena avente una profondità .
Innanzitutto il concetto di prospettiva è più semplice di quanto si pensi.
Ci sono diverse tecniche per realizzare disegni in prospettiva, ecco quelle che, a mio parere sono più utili per un disegnatore che non voglia necessariamente scendere in dettagli tecnici e matematici per realizzare la sua illustrazione.

Prospettiva Centrale (ad un unico punto di fuga)
Prospettiva Accidentale o"angolare" (con due punti di fuga)
Prospettiva Razionale (a tre punti di fuga)
La prospettiva si basa su alcuni elementi fondamentali:

LINEA Di ORIZZONTE (Abb. LO)
PIANO Di TERRA (Abb. PT)
PIANO Di PROIEZIONE (Abb. PP)
PUNTO Di VISTA (Abb. PV)
PUNTO Di FUGA (Abb. PF)

LINEA Di ORIZZONTE: E'la linea orizzontale tracciata sul foglio che rappresenta l'orizzonte visivo dell'osservatore. La linea di orizzonte determina l'altezza del punto di vista dell'osservatore rispetto al piano di terra.
Se l'oggetto si trova sopra la linea di orizzonte, significa che lo stiamo osservando dal basso, se si trova al di sotto allora il nostro punto di vista è più in alto....beh questo è abbastanza importate per disegnare superman che vola sopra i grattacieli di New York, o un Chihuaua che vi sta facendo pipì sulle scarpe.

PIANO Di TERRA: E' in sostanza la superficie su cui sta l'osservatore, che intersecando il piano di proiezione definisce una linea parallela a quella di orizzonte (detta linea di terra)

PIANO Di PROIEZIONE: E' una convenzione grafica che rappresenta un piano invisibile su cui osserviamo la proiezione dell'immagine.

PUNTO Di VISTA: E il punto di vista dell'osservatore, da cui parte il cono visivo che inquadra l'immagine.
Il cono visivo ha un'ampiezza di circa 60°

PUNTO Di FUGA: Il punto o punti posti sull'orizzonte in cui convergono tutte le linee parallele.
Nella prospettiva centrale le linee parallele in fuga verso il punto sull'orizzonte sono perpendicolari al punto di vista.
Convenzionalmente le due linee che partono dai punti di fuga e convergono nel punto di vista formano un angolo di 45°.

Questo consente di avere una rappresentazione prospettica vicina a quella reale.
Se stringiamo l'angolo e quindi avviciniamo i punti di fuga ampliamo (innaturalmente) il cono visivo ottenendo l'effetto che in fotografia viene definito grandangolo.

Qui trovate alcuni esempi di grandangolo
GRANDANGOLO

Questo tipo di visualizzazione ci consente di includere nel nostro "foglio" (quindi nel campo visivo) più oggetti e ambiente ma con una distorsione che sarà tanto più forte quanto più stretto sarà l’ angolo.
Al contrario allontanando i punti di fuga e ampliando l'angolo oltre i 45 gradi ridurremo il campo visivo e la convergenza delle rette parallele.
In questo modo si ottiene il tipico effetto di appiattimento dato dagli zoom fotografici.
Ecco perché in fotografia per scattare un ritratto è preferibile allontanarsi dal soggetto ed usare un po’ di zoom per ridurre la deformazione prospettica sul viso!
Per conoscenza, in grafica 3D il campo visivo si imposta nella telecamera attraverso il parametro FOV (field of view) lo stesso parametro è usato nel cinema per indicare il valore delle reali lenti delle telecamere!

La tecnica della prospettiva, attraverso la proiezione dei punti di un oggetto verso uno o più punti sulla linea di orizzonte, ci consente di ricostruire quello che percepiamo come volume, o terza dimensione dell'oggetto.
Prospettiva e volume sono fratelli inseparabili! Fateveli amici

Perspective -First part

As a premise, let me tell you that i will not be able to write about all the different perspective techniques in detail at this point.All i can do is give you an idea of the basics, that you will then be able to expand using other resources, such as books and website.
We are going to learn the basics for working with perspective and we’re going to learn them for two reasons:
Because Perspective helps us in representing volume
Because Perspective helps us in putting different objects of a scene in relation by giving them a different depth position.
First of all, the concept of “Perspective” is a lot simpler than what we might expect.
There are different techniques for creating drawings with a perspective view and here I am going to list all the ones that are useful for someone who wants to create an illustration without knowing any complex technical details:

One-point perspective or central perspective (with one vanishing point)
Two-point perspective(with two vanishing points)
Tree-point perspective(with three vanishing points)

A perspective view is based on some fundamental elements:

Horizon Line (Abb. HL)
Ground Plane (Abb. GP)
Projection Plane (Abb. PP)
Point of View (Abb. PV)
Vanishing Point (Abb. VP)

_The HORIZON LINE is an horizontal line drawn on a sheet and it represents the Horizon line for the observer. The line of Horizon determines from how high from the ground the observer is, watching the scene.
If an object is above the Horizon line, the observer is watching it from below; If an object is under the Horizon line, the observer is watching it from the top… this is something important for drawing superman while he’s flying through New York’s skyscrapers or for drawing a Chihuahua that is peeing on your shoes.
_The GROUND PLANE is the plane where the observer stands. This plane intersects the plane of projection and this intersection creates a line called Ground Line that is parallel to the Horizon Line.
_The PROJECTION PLANE is a convectional rule for drawing and it represent s an invisible plane on which we observe the projection of the image.
The POINT OF VIEW is the observer’s point of view from which starts the visual cone that frames the image.
This cone has an angle of 60 degrees
_The VANISHING POINT(s) is one or more points located on the line of Horizon in which all the parallel lines meet. In a Central Perspective, parallel lines that reach the vanishing point on the Horizon line are perpendicular to the point of view. For convention the intersection of two lines starting from a vanishing point and finishing in to a point of view has an angle of 45 degrees.
Having an angle of 45 degrees helps creating a natural perspective view similar to the one we have in real world.
If we decreases the angle putting the vanishing points closer to each other, we will enlarge the visual cone gaining an effect called “wide angle” in photography.

WIDE ANGLE

This kind of perspective view allows us to draw on the sheet (and in our visual cone ) more objects than we can see in the environment, but these object will be distorted the more we lower the angle.
On the opposite, if we increases the angle putting the vanishing points far from each one, we will enlarge the angle more than 45 degrees and we will increase the convergence of the parallel lines.
In this way we will obtain a flattening effect that is like the one obtained using zoom in photography.
This is the reason why in photography for picturing a person it is better to be a little bit far from the subject and to use the zoom for decreasing the perspective distortion of the face!
It is good to know that in 3D Graphics, the visual cone is settable editing the FOV (field of view) parameter of the camera: this parameter is also used for cataloging real lenses for cameras used for filming!
Perspective technique obtained projecting objects points on one or more points on the line of Horizon allows us to create what we perceive as a volume giving a third dimension to the object.
Perspective and Volume are inseparable buddies! Let'em be your friends!

PERCEZIONE VISIVA-Parte1

Sorvoliamo su quello che avviene elettricamente e chimicamente nel nostro cervello, e che ci consente di vedere...soffermiamoci invece sulla percezione sensoriale in se stessa, su quello che effettivamente vediamo e percepiamo.
La percezione visiva è fatta dalle informazioni sensoriali quanto dalla nostra esperienza visiva.
Esaminiamo quindi il risultato del processo che occhi e cervello fanno per dare significato a quello che vediamo.
La maggior parte delle nostre percezioni sono tanto complesse quanto automatiche ed immediate, anche quando le informazioni che raggiungono il nostro occhio sono minime, limitate.

Sicuramente vi accorgete da soli che leggere questo testo non significa comprendere ogni singola lettera, decifrarla, comporre la parola, sommarla alle altre in una frase, aggiungere la punteggiatura...ecc ecc. Ma molto più semplicemente cogliete immediatamente il significato attraverso forme familiari.

La familiarità con le parole è data dalla capacità di leggere aquisita a scuola, tutto il resto è dato dai messaggi sensoriali ottenuti attraverso le linee che compongono le lettere.
In sostanza la percezione visiva (come tutte le percezioni sensoriali) è composta da una parte di esperienza, e da una parte di percezione.
La somma delle due parti è un processo così rapido che è praticamente incoscio.

Nel nostro caso, visto che stiamo cercando il linguaggio giusto per descrivere il volume, osserviamo alcuni indici di percezione della profondità.

_Se si dispongono su di un foglio una serie di rette una sull'altra sempre più vicine mano a mano che salgono e sempre più strette se ne ottiene un effetto di allontanamento in prospettiva, come le traversine dei binari.
Questa percezione è detta di PROSPETTIVA LINEARE.

Se disegnamo su di un foglio linee di puntini, più o meno regolari, dal basso verso l'alto che salendo si infittiscono e riducono otteniamo un effetto simile, di grande profondita.
Come una folla ad un concerto.
Questo tipo di percezione è detta TISSURALE.

Se in un disegno un bambino si trova visivamente davanti ad un tavolo ci apparirà anche più vicino, se il tavolo vi sta davanti avremo l'effetto contrario.
Questa è detta INTERPOSIZIONE.

In un piano orizzontale, più alto si trova l'oggetto disegnato più apparirà lontano.
Questa percezione è detta di ELEVAZIONE.

Il chiaroscuro applicato ad una forma disegnata ne determina il volume.
questo indice di profondità è detto OMBREGGIATURA (Chiaroscuro)

Questi indici, sono detti monoculari, poichè danno la percezione di profondità senza necessitare di una vista binoculare tridimensionale...
Il nostro apparato visivo/cerebrale è estremamente affascinante.
Il cervello decodifica i segnali del nostro occhio e comprende inconsciamente e a volte addirittura completa forme e volumi, linee e sagome.
Tra gli indici di percezione della profondità elencati quelli che più ci interessano per ora sono Prospettiva, e Ombreggiatura
Presto osserveremo nel dettaglio questi sistemi di rappresentazione del volume, per ora vi basti sapere che i più frequenti ed importanti sistemi di prospettiva sono
la prospettiva centrale, e quella accidentale.
La prospettiva centrale ha un solo punto di fuga, quella accidentale 2.

Quel che si evince infine è che la rappresentazione del volume su di una superfice piana è mera illusione, un artificio che inganna chi osserva.
A volte un paio di linee nel posto giusto sembrano trasformare una figura piana (Fig 1A) in una tridimensionale (Fig 1B)
Sono diversi i modi in cui possiamo creare questa illusione; la prospettiva è una di queste...
Risultati analoghi si ottengono anche con l'assonometria che semplifica la reale visione e si utilizza di solito nel disegno tecnico, meccanico o architettonico.

Ma l'aiuto più grande ci viene dalla luce che plasma le forme e mostra ogni cosa come è.
Nel disegno e nella pittura, la luce si rappresenta con il cosiddetto Chiaroscuro, l'Ombreggiatura di cui accennavamo prima.
Come le rette trasformano la figura piana in una tridimensionale(Fig 1B), il chiaroscuro da solidità alle 3 dimensioni (Fig 1C)

VISUAL PERCEPTION Part-1

Lets skip the electric and chemical aspects of vision, and lets focus on the sensorial perception itself, on what we actually see.
Visual perception is given by the sensorial perception and our visual experience.

Lets examine the result of the process our eyes and brain follow to give a meaning to what we see.
The majority of our perceptions are incredibly complex as they are immediate and automatic, even when the informations that actually reaches our eyes is scarce.

You will certainly realize yourself that reading this text doesn't require us to comprehend each single letter, decypher, compose the letters in single words, sum it to all the others and add punctuation to understand the meaning of what is written, but, to put it simply, we recognize the meaning throught familiar shapes.

The familiarity with words is given from reading skills acquired in school, and all the rest is given bt the sensorial messages obtained throught the lines that compose the letters.
So visual perception (as all kinds of sensorial perception) is composed by both experience and sensorial perception.
The sum of the two parts is sucha rapid process it is practically subconscious.

In our case, since we are trying to find the right way of describing volume, lets put down some depth percection indicators:

_A series of horizontal lines one above the other that becoming smaller and closer together give a sense of depht. Parallel lines converge with increasing distance such as roads, railway lines ecc
This effect is called
LINEAR PERSPECTIVE.

If you draw pattern of point on a plane in which elements of the pattern appear to recede by consistently becoming smaller, denser, and fainter, you have an illusion of deepht.
This effect is called
TEXTUREAL PERSPECTIVE

When there is overlapping of objects the overlapped object is considered further away
This is called INTERPOSITION.

If there is an elevation difference between 2 identical objects, the higer object is considered further away
This is called ELEVATION .

Shading applied to a form shows volume
Its a LIGHT And SHADE effect.

These indications, used by the artist to indicate depth are called "monocular", because they give the illusion of depth without the aid of binocular three dimensional vision.
Our cerebral/visual apparatus is extremely fascinating.
Our brain decodes the signals from our eyes and subconsciously understands and sometimes even completes shapes and volumes, lines and silhouettes.

Among the depth indicators we mentioned above the ones we are most interested in now are Perspective and Shading.
For now we can say the most frequent kinds of perspective are one point and two point perspective.
As you might know the representaion of volume on a flat surface is mere illusion, a way of tricking the viewer.
Some times a group of lines in the right place might transform a flat shape (Fig 1A) in a three dimensinal one (Fig 1B).
There are different ways to create thins kind of illusion, and perspective is one of them.
Similar results are achieved with axonometry, which is a way of simplifying actual vision and is mostly used in architecture, technical and mechanical drawing.
But the greatest help comes from light, that described for and shows each object for what t is.
In drawing and painting, light is represented through Chiaroscuro, the Shading we were refferring too earlier.
As the adding of lines give a 3d look to a 3d shape, shading gives volume . (Fig 1C)

FORM AND VOLUME

These first posts on the basics of drawing might seem a bit boring and initially misleading, but they are fundamental to understand form and to draw in 3 dimensions...so enough of those flat-looking drawings!;-)
Don't be too hasty about starting to draw your first lines, drawing is like playing a music instrument, it takes exercise and commitment.
So don't hate me too much and be patient, I can assure you, this seemingly redundant information will prove to be useful!
These are the foundations of the building you want to build!
I myself realized the importance of this information only at a later stage, but it accelerated my learning process significantly!

One of the recurring terms of this blog is volume:

Everything that surrounds us has its own weight and mass.
How is it possible to give weight to a drawing? How can I describe form to suggest mass on a sheet of paper without it appearing flat?
The only way is to understand volume and the tricks to "fake it" on paper.
Volume is the portion of space occupied by the object we want to represent...every object fills a specific volume, replacing air or water.
In 200 BC Archimedes discovered that an object immersed in liquid moves liquid in relation to its volume...but this happens in air as well!

In mathematics, the elementary volumes are each calculated with a specific formula.
Without going into details, to calculate the volume of a solid object, you must project or extrude a face (or 2d portion) of the object.

For example, to calculate the volume of a cube you have to multiply the area of one of its faces by its height or depth.
If you're trying to visualize this operation, imagine a cube with one of its faces "extruded", that means a plane (Fig 1A,2A,) that is stretched out repeats itself like the pages of a book, creating the illusion of a 3D form with its own volume (Fig 1C,2C)

This is just the "concrete" used to build the foundation of a "solid" (no pun intended :P) way to start learning the basic concepts of drawing.
Absorb these concepts because they will be frequently referred to, and we will use them in all our drawings, in some way!
These general principles are the key to overcome the difficulties we face while trying to represent form, even the most complex ones!
At this point, a distinction must be made: what is the difference between Difficult and Complex?

Everybody says drawing the human body, a hand or a foot is a difficult task, but THIS IS NOT TRUE!
Everything that surrounds us, organic and inorganic, sentient or insentient, human or "alien", presents the same challenges, but differs in complexity.
The obstacle to be overcome to face any kind of drawing lies in the understanding of the form and its transposition from the 3D world that surrounds us to the 2D plane of the sheet of paper...once this is clear, drawing a cup will be as easy as drawing a human foot.

The only difference between the two is in the complexity of the form given by the element that composes them.

If you don't have the "key" to form, drawing is Difficult, if you do, it becomes Complex, therefore only requiring exercise and commitment.
And the key lies in the understanding of concepts like Form, Perspective...and Volume!

FORMA E VOLUME

Questi primi post sulle basi del disegno potranno sembrare un pochino noiosi ed inizialmente fuorvianti , ma sono fondamentali per comprendere le forme e disegnare in 3 dimensioni...basta con i disegnini piatti! ;-)
Non abbiate fretta di tirare le prima linee, disegnare bene è come suonare uno strumento, ci vuole esercizio e dedizione.
Vi prego quindi di non odiarmi troppo e pazientare, queste informazioni a volte un poco ridondanti, vi saranno utilissime!
Sono le fondamenta del palazzo che volete costruire!
Io stesso ne ho appreso l'importanza solo più tardi ma accellerando esponenzialmente il mio processo di comprensione della forma!

Un delle parole che ricorreranno di più in qesto blog è "Volume".

Tutto ciò che ci circonda ha un suo peso, una sua massa.
Come posso dare un peso al mio disegno? come posso descrivere una forma su un foglio che suggerisca una massa propria senza risultare piatto?
L'unico modo è conoscere i volumi e i trucchi per rappresentarli.
Il volume è quella porzione di spazio occupata dal corpo che vogliamo disegnare...ogni corpo occupa uno specifico volume, sostituendosi all'aria in quel punto o all'acqua se vi è immerso.
Archimede nel 200 Ac scopriva che un corpo immerso in un liquido sposta tanto liquido quanto è il suo volume... ma questo avviene anche nell'aria!
In matematica i volumi elementari si calcolano ognuno con una specifica formula.
Senza scendere in dettagli, per calcolare il volume di solito si proietta, o estrude in profondità una faccia o una porzione bidimensionale del solido.

Per esempio per calcolare il volume di un cubo non si fa altro che moltiplicare l'area di una delle sue facce, per l'altezza, o profondita.
Se cercante di immaginare questa operazione, nel creare un cubo vedrete un "estrusione", cioè un piano (Fig 1A, 2A,la faccia del cubo) che si allunga o ripete come tante pagine di un libro (Fig 1B,2B) dando origine ad una forma tridimensionale dotata di volume.(Fig 1C,2C)

Questo è cemento puro per iniziare le fondamenta di un percorso "solido" (scusate il gioco di parole...) nell'apprendere i concetti principali del disegno.
Assorbite questi concetti perchè ci torneremo sopra sempre, e li applicheremo in ogni disegno!
Queste "nozioni base" sono la chiave per superare le difficoltà che si affrontano nel rappresentare le forme , anche le più complesse!
A questo proposito occorre fare una precisazione, c'è differenza tra Difficile e Complesso?

Tutti dicono che disegnare un corpo umano è difficile,disegnare una mano poi è più difficile che fare un occhio...PECCATO CHE TUTTO QUESTO NON SIA VERO!
Ogni cosa, organica o inorganica, animata o inanimata, umana o "aliena" presenta le stesse difficoltà, ma è differente nella complessità.

L'ostacolo che occorre superare per affrontare qualsiasi disegno sta nella comprensione della forma e nella sua trasposizione dal mondo tridimensionale in cui si trova a quello bidimensionale del foglio, se superate questo ostacolo disegnare una tazza da te avrà la stessa difficoltà che disegnare un piede.
Tra i due si avrà solo una differente complessità della forma dovuta agli elementi che compongono i soggetti.
Se non avete la chiave della forma disegnare è difficile, se avete la chiave è solo complesso ma a questo punto basta l'esercizio.

La chiave sta nella comprensione di concetti come la Forma la Prospettiva...e il Volume!

CHE COS'E' QUESTO BLOG?/WHAT IS THIS BLOG ABOUT?

Negli ultimi anni mi è capitato sempre più spesso che, amici e colleghi ma anche persone che semplicemente vedevamo i miei lavori sul web, mi chiedessero consigli e informazioni sul disegno o sul mio lavoro.
L'idea del blog nasce quindi dal desiderio di condividere la mia passione per il disegno, l'illustrazione e la mia esperienza personale con quanti sono interessati a questo tema. Il blog non vuole quindi essere un corso o una scuola nè tantomeno fornire un metodo ultimo ed assoluto per realizzare illustrazioni o immagini, l'obiettivo è piuttosto quello di fare il punto su metodi e tecniche ampiamente conosciuti e diffusi, mostrare come li ho rivisti e reinterpretati attraverso la mia personale esperienza, svelare i "trucchi" e le metodologie che ho appreso e sviluppato per realizzare concept, sketch ed illustrazioni professionali.
Il blog è uno spazio aperto alle idee, ai suggerimenti delle persone che vorranno seguirlo!
E' pensato su tre livelli perchè sia possibile seguire i post del proprio livello ed eventualmente dare un'occhiata anche agli altri!Insomma l'idea sarebbe di un blog di disegno self service ...... prendi quello che ti va e goditelo!
